Friday, 19 October, from 08.00 pm, Manifesta 12 organises at Teatro Garibaldi di Palermo an evening of screening and talk to explore strategies of memory, and negation, of a chapter in Italian history still spreading its effects on contemporaneity.
The event will start with the projection of the film essay by Alessandra Ferrini Negotiating Amnesia, to follow a talk with researchers Francesca Di Pasquale and Chiara Giubilaro (Università di Milano-Bicocca).
Speakers Bios:
Alessandra Ferrini is a London-based artist, filmmaker and PhD researcher at the University of the Arts London. Her work has featured in international exhibitions, screenings and conferences. She is a core-member of InteRGRace, the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Race and Racisms.
Francesca Di Pasquale PhD in History, Institutions and International Relations of Extra-European Countries, she wrote extensively about history of Africa, with a specific focus on Libia and Italian colonial past.
Chiara Giubilaro obtained a PhD in Cultural Studies from University of Palermo and is grant in Geography at Department of Sociology and Social Research, Università di Milano-Bicocca. Her work concerns politics of visual representation of migrations in Italy and Europe. She is part of the interdisciplinary research group on race and racisms InteRGRace.
About the film:
Starting from a meditation on two photographic collections of the Italo-Ethiopian War of 1935-36, Negotiating Amnesia is an essay film that reflects on the visual registers and the legacy of the Italian colonial project.
The event will be in Italian, film is in English with Italian subtitles.
